For beginning students I typicaly start with a introduction book like Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Book 1 for younger students, and Solo Guitar Playing book 1 by Fredrick Noad for older and experienced students. Once fundamental techniques are acquired, I introduce repertoire suited for each student and they can participate in a performance. For older students I will work on the music they are interested in and integrate challenging material accordingly to keep lessons engaging and fun. Read More

Naturally, my method will adapt to each student's needs. This will depend firstly on what style of music we are working to develop. Next, I will base my approach on the students level of abilities. There are a number of things to consider, such as technique, aural capacity, intuitive understanding, and basic theoretical knowledge, as well as each student's particular personality traits and best method of receiving information. I have a large repertoire of pedagogical literature and performance pieces. Read More

Whatever instrument private studies we are working on, a balanced approach of performance, literature, theory, and technique are studied. Once the groundwork is established, we even work through composition on their chosen instrument. Students work at their own pace. I have some students who move quite swiftly through their levels, and that is great. Others may need more time, and that is fine. I do find that students who utilize regular and purposeful home practice will tend to get through levels a fair amount quicker. Read More

I like to focus on songs that students are interested in. I also recommend certain books to be used as supplementary learning. For children guitarists I recommend Alfred's Kid's Guitar Course. For older guitarists I recommend Hal Leonard's Guitar Method. For children pianists I recommend Faber Piano Adventures. Read More

For beginners I press through Hal Leonard's Guitar Method #1, laying a foundation of skills as well as approaching notation reading on the guitar. From there we begin to specialize based on the student's interest. For more advanced students, we'll focus on goals such as live performances, audition preparation, and repertoire. Read More

Practice Practice Practice! and wanting to practice. Probably the most important thing in music at first. The biggest problem is method in itself. There is not just one way to teach everyone. Music is a lifelong study. It never ends. So learning should be the encouragement of accomplishment. Which has to involve learning some theory but focus on mechanical and listening skills as well. Whether we practice the same drum beat over and over or strumming the same chords its here that we find what we call music. Read More
