I also incorporate reflective questions for students to get them thinking about the music in new ways (e.g., structurally, historically, philosophically, etc.). My teaching style is based off of my experiences with 10+ teachers I worked with in my history of violin playing (25 years!). I had a lot of fabulous teachers in my life, but the ones I remember and am truly grateful for are the ones who inspired me to be a better musician and ones who taught me how to teach myself. Individuality, personality and enjoyment are three things that I value highly. Each student has their own motivations for learning the instrument, their own personal goals with the instrument and their own personalities. Music is such a personal, emotional and intimate form of expression, and while there are technical aspects of playing the cello that require a more analytical approach, I believe that students must remain true to themselves, to their respective motivations and to their individuality to discover their own sense of fulfillment and the joy of playing music.
