I've been teaching people things about music since the end of high school, when I began to really feel like I had a grasp on what "good playing" sounds like. I will work with each student to help them understand the fundamentals of jazz, for example, knowing major scales, minor scales, and all of the modes that we typically see in most jazz repertoire. For students that are more advanced we will work on learning how to play over common chord progressions and learn how to play songs found in the Great American Songbook. It really is important to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the individual student to be able to determine what is the best course of action. Teaching should be fun for both the teacher and student! I truly believe that the teacher should learn as much from the teacher as the student learns. Each person interprets a song differently and I want to allow my students to be expressive and find their passion for and through music. For vocal performing, it can be a vulnerable experience.
