My name is Michael, I'm a creative, passionate piano player/instructor from Rochester, NY. Started playing at age 12 and I am now 34 years old, open to teaching all ages from roughly 8 to 80 and over, all skill levels, even someone that has never touched a piano before. My forte is jazz and samba music but I am classically trained and can teach a myriad of styles. I went to school at MCC, graduated the Associate's Degree program and took several years of lessons at Hochstein Music School. Read More

Being as humble as I can be, teaching is a privilege. I love that I'm able to offer great amounts of value to my students' lives! In my approach, I do my best to engage students with challenging questions in various capacities. I offer precise feedback. There's much we can learn from outside perspectives, and so I incorporate past experiences and insights coupled with colorful analogies for optimal growth. I also offer a diverse set of tools, that I myself employ, which makes practicing more efficient and enjoyable. Read More

It is not necessary, however, to learn chords or grooves specifically from a book for these instruments. Depending on the desired style, there may not be much use of notated music, guitar tabliture, etc. But as already stated, this does not excuse a good foundation in reading music and understanding music theory. For more advanced players (who would most likely be percussionists if working with me, though I am willing to work with any instrument at a more advanced level), we would work out of books I and the student(s) find fitting for their skill level. I am a classically trained pianist from the New York area who has performed chamber music and solo recitals throughout the world including Steinway Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and the Tenri Cultural Institute. I have been a featured artist at the International Bergen Arts Festival, held in Bergen Norway. I have won prizes in numerous competitions including first prize in the Grieg Young Artist Piano Competition held in Sarasota, Florida in 2015. Read More

I have taught nearly every instrument in a standard orchestra. I have taught singing, guitars and such, music theory composing and sight singing as well as sight reading and music history. It is always essential that the student is excited about the genre(s) we use in learning music. Yes if music is not fun then it is worthless. That being said fun is a many splendor thing. I started teaching guitar in my teens. Read More

For beginning students, I'd introduce the mechanism of the piano to them to help better understand how the sound is produced through striking the keys. I will also start with technique-building books such as Hanon, Czerny, as well as some easy beginner repertoire for them to learn. for intermediates to advanced level students, I would provide them with a more sophisticated list of repertoires, or any pieces they wish to learn! I am happy to teach absolute beginners, intermediate players, and anyone who feels like they are stuck and can't get better. In most cases I will photocopy material from a variety of books or use my own. I would most likely recommend a book after I got a feel for the students level and music style preference. The one book I do recommend for beginners who are a little older is The Complete Technique Theory and Scales by Joseph Alexander. Read More
