With my wind instrument and percussion students, I like to start with a method book. My favorites include Essential Elements and Standard of Excellence. I find that, especially for younger students, this is a great way to introduce beginner theory while learning to apply it to their playing. By 19 i had about 20 students from the age of 5 all the way to age 45, from beginner to advanced levels.
