For beginning and intermediate students, I offer my own rudiment book to start learning on a practice pad or snare drum. For learning drum set, I use a variety of books and resources. I will meet and discuss these options with each student to find the right book for them. For more advanced students, I have them transcribe entire songs from bands they enjoy. Drum set and marching percussion have been my passion since 2008. Through these instruments I've had the opportunity to meet hundreds of musicians from all over the US as well as travel much of the country. Performing everywhere from State Fair bandstands, to stadiums, to coffee shops, I've found there's always something new to see and someone new to meet. I truly enjoy seeing my students learn to appreciate music and its many styles and uses. My teaching style, while keeping a focus on the fundamentals of piano, also encourages creativity and exploration of their own. All students have different learning styles and speeds, and some students may take longer to understand certain concepts. I try to individualize the learning experience as much as possible, learning about the student's background his or her interests in music. Additionally, we'll need a second book of excerpts and exercises for consistency. The specific book that we'll work out of depends on what sorts of music you like: classical, jazz, pop, music theatre, and so on.
