Mostly I'd refer to the methods section. Though here I will discuss the dragon that is practice. It's difficult. Even I don't practice as much as I'd like and I'd wager few truly do, but it is consistency that makes the difference. I often say that music has more in common with a physical activity than an intellectual one. What I mean is, you can learn a fact and know it. Read More

For older or more advanced students, I find the Guild Series to be quite effective and interesting. With these students, following their interest, we continue with sight singing, composition and improvisation. With adults, we work on what they're interested in (classical, rock, blues, gospel), but with a firm grounding in fundamentals: scales, cadences, etc. For all my students if they don't respond to one set of materials, we switch to another until we can find a good match. For younger students, especially children, I will begin their first vocal lesson by standing next to them and showing them how to stand with correct posture. Then I will move on to breathing by having the child place their hand on their diaphragm. I will show them that it is the muscle right above their stomach. In the best way possible, I will explain to them that in order to breathe correctly, they must be able to feel their stomach move in and out instead of their chest. Read More

For voice students, I have my own curriculum to help them know how to use their voice in a good way. For piano beginning students I typically start with Piano Adventures method. For Flute students, I start with Rubank Elementary method. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire. I have song lists that have songs in different styles and levels for the student to choose from, and I also encourage students bringing songs they like to keep the lessons engaging and fun. Read More

Teaching for me works best on an individual level. Students work on different levels and languages concerning music, and you have to be able to adapt to them. Some people might understand everything from the get go, some students need graphic support, some student need to learn song to understand what they are doing. The important part of being an instructor is not the actual material to be taught but being able to clear the way for the student to learn and teach himself, as well as providing a direction towards understanding the instrument and music through the taste and necessities of each student. I've been teaching for 20 years. I love to teach primarily because I like to impart knowledge about music; but I also enjoy interacting with people. I think that the student/teacher relationship is a very importnat element of music education. I'm a patient teacher who creates a comfortable atmosphere for students. I find that this greatly facilitates the learning process. Read More

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
A normal practice session for me is no different than what I expect from my students. For wind instruments I start out with some long tones, scales, arpeggios for ten minutes. Classical studies fro ten minutes. And improvisation for ten minutes. Then I take a ten minute break and go back over things I think I missed in scales, arpeggios I will go slowly go through things that I think need work. If I see that I have a problem playing something I will find supplementary material to gain more technique.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I tried sales for a few years. It really wasn't for me. I worked as a public school teacher and I wasn't thrilled with that either. What I am doing now is good. I like private teaching and eventually I would like to play more classical music in either a symphony orchestra or in a ballet or opera company. I am also focused on being a soloist in the classical genre. The focal point of my practice is classical music and jazz studies. Commercial music does not interest me as much. I do not like to play in bars or clubs. Those places have too scary creatures.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
My most immediate goal is to play in a symphony orchestra. That is really my dream job. I am working on learning all the literature that I need to know in order to play at that level. I also may need additional instruments for a position like that. For example clarinet players may need an Eb clarinet or a bass clarinet in addition to a Bb and an A. I am looking at these opportunities and working on the music every day. The fact that I striving for this level of excellence will hopefully give my students some idea of how they need to approach their own goals.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have an undergraduate degree in music education. It was my intention at that time to pursue a career in teaching. Aside from the stability of a teaching routine I get great satisfaction out of helping others. What I found, out along the way, is that students have taught me a lot of things and their successes have lead to me greatly modifying and enhancing my instructional materials and techniques. Also teaching different instruments has enhanced my overall abilities as a musician and an instructor.
