For beginning and intermediate students, I offer my own rudiment book to start learning on a practice pad or snare drum. For learning drum set, I use a variety of books and resources. I will meet and discuss these options with each student to find the right book for them. For more advanced students, I have them transcribe entire songs from bands they enjoy. I have been teaching casually in some form or another for close to 10 years. While I have not taught at a professional level, I have been teaching in many separate fields: arts, academics, and athletics to name a few. My experiences in multidisciplinary teaching has helped me gain an appreciation for all types of learners and developed skills for connecting with and teaching students of various learning styles. My teaching dates back to my high school years in which I instructed younger students in middle school band as an assistant to the director. I have performed in all kinds of groups including jazz bands, wind ensembles, latin groups, and even choirs. I grew up in Cozad, Nebraska which is a small town, but I was influenced by so many kinds of music given this age of technology. As technology and the nature of music is always changing and evolving, a large part of my teaching involves work with a metronome, the encouragement of playing along with recordings(even for orchestral excerpts), and transcription. I strongly encourage drum set students to find songs they like to learn by ear as well as learn to notate them. I grew up with a Pianist and Music Theory Professor as a mother; I learned to read music at the same time as I learned to read English. Music has never lost that early childhood sense of wonder for me, and so it's my primary goal to share that with others. More importantly, I want to help people of all ages develop their own musical voice and directive. So my teaching style is a combination of 2 things: Teaching a student how to practice (that is, improve their fundamental skill set towards mastery of an instrument) their instrument, and helping the student develop their musical identity and interests. I’ve been playing drums for about 35 years. I’ve toured the entire US including some European countries. I’ve been on record labels, played many live shows of all types. I’ve also c-written songs, produced, engineered, and performed on quite a few successful albums. I started drumming in the 5th grade and continued through high school. I then starting focusing on performance and song writing. I joined some original bands and began building those songs and albums to make those bands successful. Read More

I always want my students to have a very positive experience taking lessons and never to feel as if there is too much pressure put on them. Every student is different so I don't have a specific teaching formula. I always ensure that the student is moving at a comfortable pace for them while still being challenged and learning new things. I am always quick to acknowledge every small bit of progress that they make and focus on the positives rather than the negatives. Read More
