Growing up with a music teacher for a mom, I began playing piano, learning music theory, and sight-reading at age 5. I have been teaching music for nearly 20 years. I am the after school music teacher for the Norwood School District. My primary goal is to make sure students are having fun and enjoying themselves during lessons. I have a laid-back disposition. During the first lesson Ill ask students what they would like to learn about. Then my goal is to facilitate how to reach that goal. Id like to have lessons be relaxed and students can work at their own pace. Read More

Instruments: Piano Flute Harmonica Music Keyboard Classical Guitar

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
It was a gradual decision. When I was in high school, I used to want to be a therapist, but I also like music. So I chose a school that offers a music education major ranked top 1 in my province and they have a psychology program ranked top 3 in the whole country, then I can use the resource in the school to learn whatever I want. Afterward, I found that I'm more interested in creating things, so I chose a Composition Direction of the Music Education Department of my Bachelor's Degree finally.

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My grandma was the principal singer in the church when she was young. She has a big family and a lot of her family members are musicians. My Grandfather used to play clarinet in the band of his workplace. My parents didn't have a chance to be a musician, but both of them love music and has absolute pitch.

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have a Bachelor's Degree of Arts in Music Education Major and a Master of Music in Composition Major. I see highly of education and want to be responsible and reliable when teaching, so I chose to earn a Bachelor's Degree that contained a teaching license issued by the government of my country. Music composition is the thing I'm interested in and it is also a major that requires the most amount of knowledge of music, such as music theory and music history. I like to read a lot and write music, and the orchestra score reading requirements can use most of my piano skills, so this major is appropriate for me.

What is your dream piece to perform and why?
Copland's Piano Variation. It is beautiful and interesting when you analyze it in a professional aspect: It sounds like a serial piece but it is actually not, and it looks like unplayable but it is well written as a piano piece, nothing is impossible. It is just hard to play well. I would recommend the orchestra version to the beginners, in the case of it is more understandable.

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I saw someone play the flute on the stage and I liked the sound. So I decided to learn it.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I like to play traditional music, popular music, and folk music. Traditional music lasts because it can be heard for a thousand times without being bored. Folk music, for me, is the folk music in my country, they are unique and come from real life, I like the stories behind them. Popular music is something like fast food when I want to relax, I can be free to have some fun in a short time.

If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I would be a scientist, a vet or therapist. I had a good chemical and biology score in high school and now I can still remember the whole chemical element chart (in Chinese). I love animals and became a vegetarian because of this, so a vet was also one of my dream works. I read a lot of books about Abnormal Psychology and Criminal Psychology because I was indicted to deductive novels.

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Insist on practicing and get used to practicing.

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I would likely to use the music of Burgnlueller, Lemoine, Czerny, Hanon, Bach, and Beethoven for most of my students. These persons' works contained the most important piano skills and music knowledge for students no matter they want to be professional or just play for fun.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
Cooperated with a director and wrote film music, and played the piano part by myself.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I had a small toy piano when I was a 1-year-old child. I started to repeat the music I heard in TV ads since I got the toy and the music is all correct. So my parents bought me a piano and I started to learn it.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Two hours/day for non-professionals.

Jazz Scales: The Pentatonic Scale

...musicians use it. And that’s why a lot of musicians think of it as a boring scale. But there are much more creative ways to use the major pentatonic scale.   That’s one of the neat things about the pentatonic scale. It sounds very different depending on what chord is underneath it. It can sound simple or it can sound extremely colorful. The pentatonic scale is one scale with many different sounds.   Over a C triad or an A-7 chord, the C major pentatonic sounds correct. All the notes fit, but the chords themselves are as vanilla as it gets. Which isn’t a... Read More

Circle of Fifths

...Located a fifth above G, the key of D major features the notes of D-E-F#-G-A-B-C#-D. The F# from the previous key stayed in and we added another sharp on the C, the 7th scale degree. This works the same way for every sharped key on the right side of the circle.   The Left Side of The Circle   The left side of the circle features keys with flatted key signatures. The first key is F, which has one flatted note on the fourth scale degree. Every next key signature will add a flatted note on the fourth scale degree while retaining the one(s) from earlier keys. For example, ... Read More

Female Drummers: Great Drummers (Who Happen to be Women)

...(that happen to be women), and that in fact, women have played a prominent and vital role in drumming and percussion throughout recorded history. I’ll just briefly introduce you to some notables in a variety of styles, and encourage you to read more about them, and of course, to listen to their work!   Layne Redmond   The late (and great) hand drummer, historian, and educator Layne Redmond noticed early on in her studies that in ancient depictions (Greek, Roman, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, etc.), drummers were almost always women. Intrigued by this, she went on to write a wonderful book called “When the Drummers Were Women”. ... Read More

Intro to Jazz Bass Technique

...to the other musicians – jazz is the art of improvisation. What is played depends on how a jazz musician reacts in real time to what other musicians in the group are playing. Each player brings their specific instrumental skill to the table and contributes to the whole. Good jazz bass technique will give you the necessary skill and chops to play jazz and make you a more well-rounded musician whatever your background or training. Regardless of what style of music you play – pop, funk, classical, country western, folk, etc., learning jazz bass technique will make you a better bass player ... Read More
