Instruments: Piano Violin Viola
For violin and viola lessons, I start my beginning students off with the violin/viola instrument hold as well as the bow hold. Once one has gotten the feel for holding the instrument as well as the bow, I teach the student the open strings of the instrument, followed by a one octave scale, with basic note reading exercises. After that, I begin the student on the Suzuki method. For piano students, I start by teaching beginning students three notes in treble clef (right hand) and bass clef (left hand). Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

I believe that music a personal experience. When faced with a new student I always ask them what type of music they are into and what are they interested in learning and how that type of music makes them feel. It is a critical part of my teaching method. I believe when a student is learning something they have a personal connection to they are more engaged. For beginner students I have them do exercises and teach them about various scales. Read More

Each lesson plan will be tailored to fit the student’s needs. Personally, I think one of the most important parts of teaching music is to give students a complete grasp of performing music by combining theory into their lesson plan to make a well-rounded musician. Their lesson plan will depend on their playing level: I will make sure they have fundamentals down for beginner students, but also adding solo repertoire and etudes to teach virtuosity and good performance practice for the advanced students. For young beginner students, I will begin with the Farber or Alfred all-in-one books. Once the student has progressed through the book, we will move on international piano books. I have used many of the pedagogy books, and I know how to find best curriculum for getting students to where they need to be technically and musically. Most of my youngest students will play a few of the pieces from Alfred book. Read More

Based on my first meeting get acquainted sessions with my students, I decide what approach to take with each person. As everyone is different, I adapt my teaching to their particular personality and needs. I have a four (4) tiered approach to my lessons - there is technique development, theory, ear-training and improvisation through learning chord sets and songs in every key PLUS, of course, the playing of music. I have a very comprehensive library where a student can music of any style to supplement his or her foundational music development. Read More

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
It was a gradual decision. When I was in high school, I used to want to be a therapist, but I also like music. So I chose a school that offers a music education major ranked top 1 in my province and they have a psychology program ranked top 3 in the whole country, then I can use the resource in the school to learn whatever I want. Afterward, I found that I'm more interested in creating things, so I chose a Composition Direction of the Music Education Department of my Bachelor's Degree finally.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My grandma was the principal singer in the church when she was young. She has a big family and a lot of her family members are musicians. My Grandfather used to play clarinet in the band of his workplace. My parents didn't have a chance to be a musician, but both of them love music and has absolute pitch.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have a Bachelor's Degree of Arts in Music Education Major and a Master of Music in Composition Major. I see highly of education and want to be responsible and reliable when teaching, so I chose to earn a Bachelor's Degree that contained a teaching license issued by the government of my country. Music composition is the thing I'm interested in and it is also a major that requires the most amount of knowledge of music, such as music theory and music history. I like to read a lot and write music, and the orchestra score reading requirements can use most of my piano skills, so this major is appropriate for me.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
Copland's Piano Variation. It is beautiful and interesting when you analyze it in a professional aspect: It sounds like a serial piece but it is actually not, and it looks like unplayable but it is well written as a piano piece, nothing is impossible. It is just hard to play well. I would recommend the orchestra version to the beginners, in the case of it is more understandable.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I saw someone play the flute on the stage and I liked the sound. So I decided to learn it.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I like to play traditional music, popular music, and folk music. Traditional music lasts because it can be heard for a thousand times without being bored. Folk music, for me, is the folk music in my country, they are unique and come from real life, I like the stories behind them. Popular music is something like fast food when I want to relax, I can be free to have some fun in a short time.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I would be a scientist, a vet or therapist. I had a good chemical and biology score in high school and now I can still remember the whole chemical element chart (in Chinese). I love animals and became a vegetarian because of this, so a vet was also one of my dream works. I read a lot of books about Abnormal Psychology and Criminal Psychology because I was indicted to deductive novels.
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Insist on practicing and get used to practicing.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I would likely to use the music of Burgnlueller, Lemoine, Czerny, Hanon, Bach, and Beethoven for most of my students.
These persons' works contained the most important piano skills and music knowledge for students no matter they want to be professional or just play for fun.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
Cooperated with a director and wrote film music, and played the piano part by myself.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I had a small toy piano when I was a 1-year-old child. I started to repeat the music I heard in TV ads since I got the toy and the music is all correct. So my parents bought me a piano and I started to learn it.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Two hours/day for non-professionals.

I would like to inquire about piano and possible voice lessons. I would prefer a lesson schedule that meets once per month, but for a longer duration than weekly lessons.
Melissa
My husband is interested in taking piano lessons and I would like to inquire about rates. He owns a keyboard and would be open to either in home or studio lessons.
