I teach beginning students both by rote and through reading. We use standard Suzuki books for repertoire and method books such as Wohlfahrt, Mazaz, and Sevcik. Very young students begin on Sassmanshaus since it is very engaging as well as well written. However if there is a specific book a student wants to learn from (such as a book from school or a specific style such as country or fiddle) then I am more than willing to teach from that. Read More

I do tailor my music lessons for the individual student. There really is no making a general statement for a specific person. There are, however, some very fundamental aspects of learning music for all people which will definitely include practicing and mastering scales of all type, performing with others, and using the ears to truly listen to intervals and the emotions that are invoked by performing certain keys in specific styles. My teaching style is focus to develop my student's own artistic personality. I always remind my students the importance of growing as a musician using your unique perception of music. That is what makes every student special. In addition, I combine, not just different music styles, but also, different types of art. The understanding of the relationship of music with another arts and history is as important to me as the technique itself. Read More

My favorite thing about teaching is that no two students are the same; and no two lessons with the same student are either! It is so important to establish a goal for a student to work towards, so that they know what they're practicing for. Not huge goals either that are months away, but goals that can be accomplished between each lesson. The best part of the job is seeing students get excited for music, and being able to grow in such a way that they're able to put their personality into their performances. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
For beginner students I start with the basic for both piano and voice. For voice we start with breathing, pitch, and starting a healthy techinque and proper places to sing from. For piano I follow the Alfred's serious and begin with music theory as well. Once my students advance we begin with new solo repertoire and more advance theory and sight reading. The more advance the student become the more intense and difficult the material will become. Read More

My teaching style is very process oriented. Goals are set, but are the natural outgrowth of well developed plans and consistent effort. I strive to inspire my students with the passion for playing and the act of making music, rather than the goals of perfection or winning a competition. Personally, music has always been a way for me to understand and enrich my life in more meaningful ways than I ever could have imagined. Read More

I began teaching as a teenager when I was in Ann Arbor's psychedelic rock band SPROTON LAYER. I have taught friends and family off and on for many years. During the economic crash in 2009, I took a course on Teaching to understand different age groups and varied approaches in learning. Since then, I have taught steadily and found it very rewarding. One of the hardest things to get across to the Student is that the single most important thing to do is Play. Read More
