I am very positive about teaching my students. I have the knowledge to teach about the theory, technique and flow of the music up through the intermediate level. I don't necessarily stay with the music until it is perfect, because as the student learns more they can always come back to it and play it better. The beginning students always start in a book, which is usually John Thompson's "Teaching Little Fingers to Play", or for the older students, "Bastien's Book for Older Beginners."  As they move along, the students often have an idea of what they want to play, and often bring me music, especially the adolescents.  I can determine more upon working with the student over time. I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us.
