I start beginners off with Frances Clark, The Music Tree Series. I also use the Faber-Faber Piano Adventures and Helen Marlais' Succeeding at the Piano. As students progress, I focus on repertoire pieces issuing from the baroque, classical, romantic, and modern eras as to introduce students to the history of music. Important components of home-practice include sight-reading and technique-building exercises. I also encourage sight-singing as a way of developing the student's ear. Read More

I began teaching when I started studying with Berklee. Admittedly, I wasn't entirely sure how to take on such a job, but soon discovered that it was something that came naturally to me, and something I enjoyed doing. I have taught students of varying levels, from a complete beginner unable to read any music, to someone who was able to sightread proficiently. I like to take the time to know what my student's goals are, and help them work towards achieving them. Read More

More than anything music should be fun. The greatest musicians are the ones who enjoy playing music even when they're just practicing. I like to teach in a way that involves asking the student questions in order to get them to figure out the answer for themself, rather than just lecturing the whole time while they start daydreaming! This way the student is more involved in the learning process and it can make their time spent learning an instrument more worth it. Read More

I am passionate about my students and about music. From the outset of working with music students I emphasize the importance of good posture and handling of their instrument, good breathing technique, good embouchure, and regular practice in order to develop strong embouchure and technique and knowledge of their instrument. I love teaching! Whether it is music, dance, math, or anything else I may find myself teaching, I give my all to my students. Read More

Hello! While playing music is one of my favorite thing in the world, it doesn't seem to compare to teaching others how to make music. I'm a University of Michigan student who loves producing and jamming out. I started my musical career at age 10 with the cello, but pretty quickly changed to the piano. My formal education is lacking, but I've spent the last 12 years learning theory and performance through books, articles, and lots and lots of trial and error. Read More

I am a piano teacher who came from a culture that does not really appreciate music. I lived there for 24 years, and I had not had the chance to pursue my dreams in music. Now that I am here having the freedom to work towards achieving my goals in music, I am studying, teaching music, expressing and sharing my love for it. I started teaching music officially in 2010, but before that I had given training courses and private lessons in some churches, and that was starting from 2005. Read More

I like to teach at your pace. If you want me to teach you songs, we can learn tabs and chords. Also, I can teach fundamental music theory which includes things like scales so you can solo on your guitar in certain keys of the song. The theory will also tell you which chords you can play, so if someone says play in G minor, you know what notes are the right ones to play. Read More

Instruments: Piano Trumpet

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I have been playing the trumpet and flugelhorn for 19 years and I love the sounds, the look, and the features that go with it. It’s a perfect musical bond that I am happy to be a part of.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My favorite music genres that I love to play are jazz, funk, hard bop, and soul. With jazz music, when it comes to improvisation and composing, you are free to play whatever note or rhythm that fits the form or chord of the given tune. When soloing, it is like you are putting your heart and soul to the music. That is the beauty of jazz music. To me, jazz music has created a humongous web of genres that everyone needs to keep open-minded about. Without the blues, we would not have jazz music. Without jazz music, we would not have R&B, pop, hip hop, soul, etc.

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I started playing on the piano/keyboard when I was in college doing keyboard technique classes. It was difficult doing those levels, till I learned a much simpler way of playing the piano from Scott Gwinell at OU.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Give the child time to grow and see if he/she is really interested in music and wanting to learn it. It doesn’t matter how old you would be to start playing or practicing an instrument. Music is definitely for all ages. Anyone may be surprised if the child is a prodigy like Mozart was in his young time.

When will I start to see results?
You will be able to see results in his/her performance if they are planning on doing any solo and ensemble work or any school performance (jazz or concert band). The main important thing that a child has to do when taking private music lessons is to definitely make the time to practice a piece of music or even listen to a certain tune or even watch their favorite musicians.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I had a private trumpet teacher that helped me with mastering the trumpet and help me learn pieces for solo and ensemble. She also inspired me to go to my dream college of Oakland University, where I learned music theory, history, and techniques for both classical and jazz. At OU, I’ve learned and been inspired by some of the best jazz professors…. Miles Brown (bassist, big band leader, and jazz theory professor); Sean Dobbins (drums; jazz combos); Scott Gwinell (piano, jazz piano); and Anthony Stanco (jazz trumpet). Without them, I would not have learned the concepts, history, and the theory jazz music.

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Everyone in my family listens and loves music. My grandfather from my dad’s side did learn to transcribe any country songs via guitar. My brother even played the drums in middle school, but quit after a while.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
For any musician that is a beginner, I would practice for 30 minutes everyday. However, for any advanced/ professional musician, I would practice everyday 1-2 or even 3 hours a day.

Best Age to Start Bass Guitar Lessons

... What is the best age to start bass guitar lessons? Many bass players actually start out on the guitar before beginning on bass, but many students do choose bass as their first instrument. Before committing to signing up for bass guitar lessons, it’s important for parents and students to know that the student is the right age to get started. The biggest issue when it comes to starting lessons on the bass guitar is the size of the instrument. The neck, or fret board, of a standard bass typically measures just under three feet in length. Many guitar manufacturers produce smaller “short-scale” guitars designed for students with smaller bodies and shorter arms, generally 3/4 the size (meaning a 32-inch neck would be ... Read More
