Once I went to Eastman, I taught several people throughout the course of the four years there. I always try to encourage students to see the small victories in playing music; regardless of how significant or noticeable an achievement is. Many students get down on themselves because they can't play something or they make a mistake. This is a deficit mindset that stunts growth long term. I encourage students to set their own goal, no matter the age. For youth, I desire the parents to be involved and provide encouragement in between lessons to ensure that students get the best result. I use positive reinforcement with my students as I have with my own children.
