My teaching style is just like most I think. I don't rush with the students. Always trying to go slow and make sure the students understands everything. I've gotten pretty good at figuring out when the students get what I'm trying to teach. If I feel like I'm going to fast I'll stop think about what I'm doing and slow down. It's easy to talk to fast and rush as a teacher because I've taught so many students. Read More

My experience with teaching began during my undergraduate studies. I have worked with students in the classroom teaching elementary music as well as at the middle school and high school level teaching choir. In addition, I have taught my closest friends in piano and organ. While I was the staff accompanist at a high school, I taught the treble choir and gave piano and voice lessons during off-periods. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching, especially when I see that students are inspired by music and are willing to take on the task of mastering their craft. Read More

My teaching style is relaxed and encouraging. I find students typically do best in an environment where they feel comfortable and safe. I like to get to know each student's individual learning style and goals and then construct my lessons based on that. I enjoy every level of instruction, from playing early music reading games with 3 year olds, to helping high school students prepare for college music auditions, to helping adults become more confident at karaoke night. ..................................... My teaching style is more hands on approach, I have a lot of opportunities for my students to perform. I believe that actually playing the instrument will make them better players and performers. Even when a student sign up for private lessons, I have opportunities for them to perform in groups. I think that students learn better when they have the chance to perform in a group. I also hold master classes for the students to learn from. Read More

I am a lover of music that has always enjoyed sharing it with others. I have been involved in musical activities all through since grade school. I graduated with a Master of Music Arts with a specialty in teaching from Texas Woman's University so I could better share my love of music. I have also been in one choir or another over the years. I sang with the Denton Community Chorus, Nairobi Concert Choir and had the privilege of performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City with the Texas Woman's University Concert Choir. Read More
Instruments: Piano
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Piano is a foundational instrument and coming from a family of musicians, all 10 of us siblings started on the piano. The piano let some to different instruments, but once you learn the piano, your ability to pick up and learn other instruments is exponentially easier. The notes, chords, time signatures and music theory translate to other instruments. At at a minimum if an individual can take a few years of piano and then move to another instrument, they will have a much easier time learning an additional instrument. If you start your child with piano right away, by the time they are in middle school and want to participate in band for example, they will be well equipped and have an advantage.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am proud I have spent a lifetime playing the piano for others, as well as, my own enjoyment! My family, my friends, my church, for so many weddings, funerals, choirs, etc.. I am so proud of the many students I have taught and that stuck with the instrument until they were able to play fluently and gained the lifetime enjoyment from the piano instrument. I had one student, Sarah, who started lessons with me in 3rd grade. She was very motivated and very bright! She worked hard at learning and advancing on the piano, as well as, in her knowledge of theory and her appreciation of music. We worked together until Sarah was a junior in high school. At that point, it was my pleasure to say Sarah needed the next level teacher:) What an accomplishment for her, as well as, myself. Along the way, Sarah participated in band, learned other instruments and kept with her piano for many years.
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Any one of my students succeeded and deserved special honors every year that they stuck with the piano. However, it was my greatest pleasure when a student wanted to compete at, for example the MNTA piano competition. To learn a difficult piece, to master it, perform it in a competitive venue is a big hurdle and accomplishment for a student. I encourage and try to insensitize a student to try a competition at least once - certainly not required as not everyone is comfortable with this, however, like recitals, a competition can be a great teaching tool.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I use a combination of methods, Alfred, Leonard, etc. - I don't subscribe to one method, but find using a variety in combination usually works best. There is no substitute for learning and memorizing your notes, for learning and being able to play to the time signature, for learning music theory, etc.. I have found finding out what style of music the students likes and wants to play is often very motivating and from that point, bringing in all the required elements. You can learn the notes, time signatures and theory from playing any style of music and often playing what you like, whether it is show tunes or pop, keeps you sitting at the piano and playing.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
Warm up first - warming up the hands, fingers, wrists is as often neglected as stretching before and after a workout!
