Instruments: Piano Trumpet Drums French Horn

For kids, I'll start with easy but basic notes and chords. I try to make it fun like learning songs they might know. For young adults to adults, I'll do the same but on their level and the expectation is much higher than kids. Read More

Instruments: Piano Trombone Ukulele Recorder Euphonium Tuba

For beginner students who are children, I usually start with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has advanced to where I can see that they have a good grasp of the fundamentals of the instrument, that is typically when I begin to introduce solo repertoire and supplement with my own material. For adult beginners, I typically will try and use the Essential Elements book to start with but not for very long. Read More

Instruments: Piano Flute

I like to use Trevor Wye's methods when I teach. I own the 6 volumes and I recommend that my students buy at least one of his books as well. For more advanced players, I introduce Paul Edmund-Davies' Daily Exercises. I stress the importance of long tones for the effect they can have on a flautist's tone, color, volume, etc. As mentioned before, I will also encourage students to enter competitions and/or find another opportunity to perform their piece in front of an audience/judges panel. This should give the child a sense of accomplishment. Along the way I also have little treats I will give to a student, candy, cookie, pencil, eraser. Nothing expensive. I emphasize that music is math in all concerns. It is proven that the students math grades will improve when they do music. It is science based. If I notice students getting bored I have theory sheets, (fun sheets) that the child can use and computer program, Quaver. Read More

Instruments: Piano

I am a professional licensed educator, as well as, a mother of two grown children, both of which influence my teaching method. My style is individualized to the student's personality - what works for one may not work for another. One student may be very driven to learn theory and do written homework, while another may find written homework to be agonizing but love learning new pieces of music - I will work with both styles, with the same result - each student learns to play the instrument and learns the required theory to be able to play the piano, while hopefully enjoying it along the way! For piano ages 7-12: I typically start with Primer Piano Adventures or Level 1. I also use Keith Snell Scale Skill Levels for skill and chord practices which is helpful for all kinds of music! For guitar and ukulele: Hal Leonard guitar and ukulele method. These books also teach reading the notes in sheet music and understanding how to play them on the guitar or ukulele, as well as including a tab. Read More

It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
