For piano students I teach students first to listen and immitate and then read. Once they master some basics in reading music I introduce chords. My vocal students start each lesson with warmups and apply the techniques to the songs that they are learning. To keep book costs down, the Alfred's All-in-One Piano Method (children's or adult's) is a good choice for beginning students.
