My approach to teaching is student-centered and based in learning to practice "smart," not "hard." I never loved practicing myself, so I have learned to get the most out of my time at the keyboard. Younger students and busy adults generally appreciate this approach! Of course, there is struggle, and that's all a part of it, but it needn't be arduous or painful. I focus students immediately on what they would most like to accomplish, and together we map out the steps to get to that place. Read More

Over 30 years of private and public/private teaching experience. I love to teach. In my lessons, I get to know each student personally, learn their strengths and weaknesses and proceed from there. Each student is unique and learns at a different pace. It is important for a teacher to know this and to work on technique, pieces, and recital planning to best showcase each individual. My methods have always been successful, and taking a student from point A to point B, C, D and beyond is so rewarding in my work. Read More

Throughout my studies of music education I was exposed to several different pedogies. I have incorporated parts of these pedogies to develop my own teaching style. My method includes focusing on the student's specific needs and learning style to foster the best environment for learning. Read More

In 1979, I traveled to New York City, intending merely to spend the summer before finishing my last year at the University of Wisconsin. After a few short weeks of being there, though, I was getting so much work as a musician that I decided to stay. I've worked and toured with some of the great legends of jazz music such as Abbey Lincoln, Jackie McLean, Stanley Turrentine, and Freddie Hubbard. Read More

I am a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. In 1992, I graduated from Baruch (CUNY) with a degree in Applied Music. I have performed in Nashville and in New York City which has been one of my greater experiences as a musician, and I have had the opportunity to play at Jazz and Country Western clubs. I also am part of the September Concert Event every year for the past 9 years performing with my students and holding a tribute with The Loupakis Gymnastics from Astoria in Athens Square Park. I have an innate desire to share knowledge. I like to imagine my passion for teaching for my students as a development section in a symphony: Ever expansive! I started teaching piano in the Hoff-Barthelson Music School in the Scarsdale, NY community. Going further I taught and tutored piano and music theory to fellow adults in my alma mater: Manhattanville College. Currently I am the music instructor for the White Plains Youth Bureau STEAM Academy. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
"You reap what you sow." If you want to be GREAT, you must be willing to WORK HARD. As your teacher I will push you to practice and become the BEST musician you can possible be.
Practice N Enjoy :)
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child shows an interest in music, by singing or dancing whenever a song is played on the radio. Then your child is ready for music lessons. Music lessons are for anyone who LOVES music.
When will I start to see results?
Every student progresses differently, depending on your commitment and study habits. However, every student will learn the fundamentals of music. Which include (but are not limited to) ear training, harmony, music theory and technique.
As an experience music instructor, I never give empty promises to students no matter what level. However, if you decide to take music lessons with me, all students will learn the fundamental of music and once a student is able to develop the above mentioned skills, you will see results very quickly.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My inspiration came from within, I didn't grow up with a musical family, but my love for music came when I realized it was a form of self expression. I started studying arts education at a very young age and was blessed to have parents that supported my love of music.
I worked with wonderful teachers and artists who all played a role in shaping my artistic life. Therefore, I can not name just one teacher who inspired me to go into music, because it was a village of people who inspired me to go into music. Sometimes you don't always need someone to "inspire" you, the inspiration is sometime already there!
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
As mentioned before, I was blessed with the gift of a voice, therefore, my instrument chose me. Once I realized how natural singing was, I started studying voice right away. I took my music studies very serious; as a teenager I spent my Saturdays from 9am-5pm studying music. I eventually started taking piano lessons to support my vocal career. Yet, I am so grateful that I didn't have to "choose" an instrument, music was my calling and I am so happy this is what I get to do every day. Forever grateful :)
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my music business accomplishments, although I have travel the world as a singer. There is no greater joy than sharing and teaching my God given talent. This is my most proudest moment, when I see a child light up once he or she understands a musical concept. I have so many musical accomplishment, yet, teaching will always be near and dear to my heart. I co-founded a mobile music company helping underserved children afford music lessons. I am so passionate about music, I wish I could share my love of music with the whole world.
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Many of my students are professional artists in their own right. However, one particular student who studied under me for a very long time, went on to study music and earned a BA in vocal performance as well as a Master's degree in Music. This student is currently teaching private students and performing at professional venues throughout New York City. I have another student who performs globally as a recording artist. He started taking lessons with me when he was only eight years old. So many of my students have professional careers in music.
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Confidence, is the hardest part of singing. Many people are naturally talented but many lack the confidence to go forward and pursue their musical goals. My job as a music teacher/coach will be to help each student build up their confidence to learn all the fundamentals of music. Once you have overcome the fear of singing or performing then you can begin to master the art of learning music. I believe fear is the hardest thing when it comes to music, because most people are more concern about "how they sound."
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I use several teaching method books, for example Alfred, Hal Leonard, etc. However, I have a customized music curricula designed for all my students. I believe students learn in different ways, therefore, one method book would not work for my teaching style. All students have specific needs and I have created a course that works best for all music students.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
A normal practice session will consist of physical stretching, breathing exercises, several vocal warm ups and repertoire building.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I could not see myself doing anything else other than music. I love my job and love sharing the gift of music, it's my calling :)
