For beginning musicians, I like to start with the very fundamentals of music theory in order to get them comfortable with reading music and understanding what they are doing. Books I have used in the past include the Essential Elements series and the Melodious and Progressive Etude series. I also understand the importance of enjoying what one is playing, so I always urge students find pieces or books for themselves that they are interested in, and incorporate them into my lessons. Music is my life, my passion: I constantly maintain my demonstration of this, in my manner, my teaching, my performance. This, I find, is infectious to all who cross my path. I also maintain an attitude of gratitude for my talent, and my parents' love, support and encouragement of my music. By them placing me into lessons at the age of 6 (accordion!), along with my drive and dedication and high level of musical education, I am a full-time musician, performer, and music educator. I am a flutist turned conductor turned accompanist who loves to pass on a love for music! My philosophy is to teach of broad spectrum of musical skills, thoery, history and application in order to let the student personalize their love for the arts. I know that it took me a while to decide to be a music major and then even more to decide how I wanted to integrate music into my life - but I had teachers who inspired me to make music a driving force in every area of my life and I want to pass that same love on in my student’s lessons. Lessons always begin with a brief review over what was covered during the previous lesson and what materials were practiced by the student. New concepts and techniques are modeled by me first. I then provide several opportunities for the student to practice this new idea or skill in a variety of ways. I am also a huge fan of incorporating educational games and activities to maintain students' interest in the lesson. Read More

For my beginner students who are children I typically start out with either Hal Leonard or Fabre lesson books to learn all the very important foundational keys in music. As I notice they are grasping the concepts and able to apply them I then like to find outside resources such as sheet music, classical, pop to allow them to enjoy and discover what they love most. When it comes to my beginner adult students I usually start them off in the Fabre adult beginner book. Read More
