My approach varies depending on the student.  For younger students I usually take a very systematic step by step approach using method books.  If the student already knows what they want to learn and has specific goals I try to tailor to their needs. Since then I have been teaching music privately and in public schools for the last 9 years. I have helped students of all levels and had private students win auditions in county and district events on the Trumpet.
