Playing the piano has been a lifelong passion for me and I am excited for the opportunity to pass on my love and skill for music to anyone who wishes to engage in this rewarding art form. Although I have been involved in several styles of music over my career; gospel, jazz, blues, contemporary Christian, and classical, I have spent most of my life as a church musician. Most recently, I was the worship pastor for a medium sized church in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Read More

Watching someone's face light up the minute they completed a song with small amount of mistakes brings a smile to my face. I remind them it's not about learning the song and mastering it right away, but rather taking time to be comfortable with what they are doing. I get to know my students so I know how fast or slow we need to work and what interests them so I can motivate them along the way. Read More

My teaching style begins with my assessment of each student's abilities, physical, mental, and emotional. By this method I am able to design a realistic program for each student. Patience and encouragement go hand in hand, acknowledging their accomplishments all along the way. Once some fundamentals are established, I add pieces that the student has an interest in learning. In preparing for recitals I often accompany students which adds not only enjoyment for them but encouragement for them to overcome hesitancy to perform publicly. Read More

From the time I started myself in piano to the time I graduated from a conservatory of Music - I had worked with a total of nine piano teachers in seventeen years. Of these teachers - one was stellar, one was horrid, and the rest fell somewhere in between. That experience taught me what works well and what doesn't in teaching others and inspiring them to excel. The pedagogy program at my conservatory also gave me hands-on training and kick-start ed my teaching career in San Francisco. Read More

For my beginning piano students, I like to start with Alfreds performance books and music theory to help assist the note and music reading. My cello students that are still in the beginning stages I like to have using the Suzuki books to help work towards more advanced music and skills. My voice students are all very different so I shape our lesson methods based on what style of singing theyre interested in, but we always begin working on proper breathing and learning solfege. For beginning students playing piano I typically start with Alfred's' Basic Piano Library, deciding on level when I learn about a students background in playing. On any brass wind instrument I will start with Measures of Success by FJH Music. It's important to me that students practice and understand the important of fundamentals in their music playing. A solid foundation provides students with the necessary tools to advance their musical career far past casually impressing friends with simple and redundant pieces. Read More
