Everyone learns at their own pace. I want every student to make sure they are comftable with all information each week that is being introduced to them. Music should be fun and a way to express yourself. With that being said, every student has different methods that helps them learn material and I don’t want anyone to feel discouraged if they are not understanding at the same speeds as others they may know. I prefer Piano Adventurers for the series I use to teach piano at all levels. Their series is clear and has the proper scope and sequence to teach all ages. I supplement that technique book with a book for finger independence. Hanon virtuoso exercises and scale. As far as my singing method books, I use an Italian technique for singing. The book I use often time is Vaccai. Mainly I use my ears to determine what the student needs to focus on. Read More

I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music and Jazz can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. I have been teaching in my own home and in student's homes for 9 years. I excel in teaching my students to be proficient sight readers because I want them to gain the ability to sit down with any piece of music and play it. I believe my job as a teacher has been fulfilled if my students reach a point where they no longer require my help. I also want my students to reap the benefits of music that go beyond performance at the keyboard, such as confidence, enhanced motor skills, challenging mental stimulation, a desire to learn, and emotional development. If there's anything I've learned over the years as a piano teacher, it's that every student develops and progresses at his or her own pace. My job, if doing it well, is to work with them, at THEIR pace, while at the same time, encouraging and pushing them forward. Just as some baseball managers are regarded as a player's manager, I like to consider myself a student's coach. That is, a teacher who is in the student's corner, supporting them, encouraging them, believing in them, no matter how much they may struggle, or how many bumps in the road they may face along their musical journeys. I am a passionate and motiviated pianist and instructor and love sharing my love of music with my students! I have been playing piano for 22 years, and graduated from Taylor University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management Systems and Piano Performance. I also earned a minor in music recording technology. I love playing piano for my church's worship services, and have had an opportunity to serve as an accompianist for a wide variety of musicians. I have been teaching music for over 15 years. My lessons are very specific and similar in structure and format. Regardless of which direction the student wishes to take their musical development, a foundation of classical training is mandatory. I teach classical piano and flute but have opened up the lessons to include pop, rock and jazz on occasion. I am patient yet strict. I temper my expectations of excellence to fit my perception of my student's capabilities. Read More
