I first began teaching music students in 2002, with my very first student being on guitar. Since then I've been priveleged to teach beginning guitar, beginning drums, and piano to students as young as 3 and as old as 60. I also worked at Gymboree Play n' Music where I taught music classes to children and their parents from 6 months old through 5 years old. While in college, I played gigs with my band in north and south Louisiana, directed music for contemporary worship services at various churches, led youth bands, and participated in the Centenary College's: Jazz Band (piano drums), Cantare Choir (voice), Wind Ensemble (percussion), Percussion Ensemble, and Chamber Orchestra (percussion). I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. Since the begining, I focus on sight reading and learning repertoire strategies. I believe that if the student is capable of reading and learning the repertoire quickly, he or she will become much more motivated and the act of practicing will be something pleasant. I like my students to fell they practice because they like to, and not only because they have to. For all students we will begin with building the centerpiece of any musician, their tone. We will work on necessary fundamentals to build the students embouchure, as well develop the students technique and skills no matter the level. My saying is to be better than your yesterday.
