I am originally from upstate New York and earned both my BM and MME at SUNY Fredonia. I have been teaching private and small group lessons for over twenty years. I first talk with my students to figure out their goals.  Once a reasonable goal has been agreed upon, I enthusiastically help them jump right into playing their instrument.  By breaking up portions of the lesson with review of simpler pieces, I encourage my students to play fun and simpler things as well, so that they do not beocme frustrated.  I always bring my positive attitude to each lesson, and have the students write down what to work on after each lesson. In the first lessons, I explain the the beginner students the basic functionality of the instruments, the proper way to hold the instruments, how to produce a clear sound from the instruments and a Major scale ascending and descending, the one from which the first lessons or the next lessons is written. If the students already had books from prior music instructor, we pick up from the last lessons after answering questions t o make sure the students thoroughly understand the lessons from the previous chapters and he or she is ready to proceed to the next lessons. It is rewarding to teach piano.  If a student is really interested in learning, it is such a pleasure.  If they are young, I usually use a book that includes cartoons between lessons.  For adults I use an adult book, but try to include a solo that they can handle that relates to a season or something they are interested in playing. I taught children and adults from beginners to advanced intermediate. There I coached choirs of beginners to sing classical and folk music of high quality and did outstanding concerts around the island. All along I never ceased to teach myself new disciplines. I self taught counterpoint Renaissance style and some time ago while in Toronto Canada I was able to coach a university student there on Counterpoint when she was having trouble for her test in which she finally excelled after our lessons. With young beginner string students, I typically will start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. After a few weeks of that, the student will have grasped the fundamentals. and then I will introduce the Suzuki method, supplementing with the O'Connor Method. For piano I generally will start with the Suzuki method and supplement with any songs the student is interested in learning. For Adults I try to find out what style of music the student is interested in, and how much experience they have and structure my lessons accordingly to keep the student engaged and ensure they are having fun!
