My teaching philosophy can be described as 'one step at a time.' For me personally, some elements in my playing took a long time to develop, and nothing happenes overnight. I like to take elaborate steps with my students so that they have building blocks to continuously improve, while also ensuring them that progress is not always linear! I always like to hear how my students play in my first lesson to see what they know, and what they enjoy, and that helps me craft my plan to instruct them based on what they need and what they love! Hi everyone, my name is Kyle I'm a recent graduate from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. I received my Bachelor Music in Vocal Jazz Performance from there in May of 2014, I also used to direct The Green Street Brew, an a Capella group from Northampton (but I still arrange music for them). My passion in music is coming up with new ideas for well known song as well as coming up with my own songs and lyrics. Read More

Once it becomes clear what excites the student the most, I provide the nourishment and structure necessary for fun and progression. I custom tailor our lessons to their wants and needs. If the student has been playing their instrument without lessons I investigate what sounds and styles they apparently are drawn to and consider that when planning lessons. I do a lot of prep work at home and often custom design printouts to supplement any book we will be reading from. Read More

Instruments: Piano
Through my seven years of teaching piano, I have worked with a variety of students ages 5-75. I emphasize technique and music theory alongside excellent repertoire. The student and I generally choose repertoire together, so that both of us can be excited to work on the pieces together. As a composer, I also encourage my students to create their own music. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
It takes a lot of focus and discipline. I would make sure that practice time is set aside and written into a schedule. Don’t spend too much time focusing on things you aren’t succeeding at but go back to a simpler form that you have already mastered and build on that area. For example, if you are having trouble with a C Major scale in piano, you can go back to a five finger pattern by breaking the scale down into those first five notes (C, D, E, F & G). Once you have mastered this, you can add on A, B, & C.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I had quite a few teachers who inspired me to do music. My mother, first of all, took me a church choir rehearsal at age four or five, and it was love at first sound! My grandfather listened to big band music & songs that sounded like Frank Sinatra. And he was always listening to tapes and records as far back as I can remember. My earliest music teacher was back in kindergarten. Having a music class at that age was so influential for me. My introduction to instruments was in fifth grade when I started taking clarinet lessons. This was when I really started to pick up on music notation/reading music. And although, I've been singing my whole life, I didn't quite learn how to properly sing until my freshman year of high school. I worked incredibly hard for three years so that I could eventually join the elite chorale, which I made my senior year. I would have to say my high school choir director had the biggest influence on me in terms of really studying and pursuing music.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
My music degree is in vocal performance with an additional focus on piano. I chose vocal performance because I have always been singing and this is the instrument that has always come the most naturally for me. I love singing and it just made sense. After a couple of years I chose to add piano lessons because this was another instrument I seemed to pick up quickly and enjoyed playing. I had a goal to be able to sing and accompany myself on piano simultaneously and I was able to reach that goal in time to perform a piece at my recital.
