I work to foster a love of music and a desire to excel in each of my students. I want them to practice because they love it and want to succeed! I also feel that it is important to be a well rounded musician, so we will focus on theory, sight reading, composition, musicianship, performance-practice, and other important and fun aspects of music. I believe that it is important to be grounded in a classical foundation (for both piano and voice students), but I also make sure to bring in pieces of the student's favorite style- which I find helps motivate them to practice and enjoy lessons even more. I am passionate about helping others find their passion especially in music. I love teaching people how to make cool sounds with their voices. What I run into a lot is that a long time ago someone told My student that they could not sing and it's funny how people carry that with them throughout their lives so my job is to change that perception. It's not always easy. I tried to give my students clear expectations of what I want and try to make them feel comfortable by using humor and getting them to relax and not be afraid to make an ugly sound Read More

I am all about the individualized approach! Whether the student is looking at their instrument for the very first time or they are a seasoned veteran performer looking to freshen their approach or hone one specific side of their craft, I'm here and thrilled to help. Everyone learns differently; I recognize some kids and adults alike find the idea of staring into a book and practicing rudiments or études for hours a day either intimidating, boring, or both. I have started teaching shortly before college, and have a proven track record of working as an independent instructor and part of teaching collectives. I am a member in good standing with both MTNA and MSMTA, and have been consistently teaching students out of my home studio for the past 15 years. With younger students, I prefer emphasizing habit formation, such as setting a practice schedule, regularly committing to a set amount of practicing time, and develop a passion for the piano. I've been teaching private music lessons since I first started college in 2004. I've taught at community centers, afterschool programs, and music stores since graduating in 2008, and started my own home studio about 2 years ago. I like to teach the rudiments, as the fundamentals of music and of one's instrument provide the solid base upon which all else is built, though I also stress creativity for all my students. I encourage students to draw from many genres of music, and not limit themselves to one style or method of playing. Read More

For young beginner piano students, I keep the number of books to a minimum so lessons dont become too overwhelming, and in order to help them stay organized. I often recommend the first Alfred All-inOne book, plus a Just the Facts music theory book which students love because there are fun games and activities at the end of each lesson. Once the student has learned enough fundamentals, I will recommend other books and provide supplemental material. Read More

I began teaching a few beginner-level students during my first few years of college, and I have taught at the Bach to Rock music schools, and found that I enjoyed building new musicians. I like to emphasize the benefits of consistent, focused practice, especially to my beginner students, as well as the importance of proper warm-up activities. While I believe that music students should learn what they can of the vast and beautiful classical repertoire, it is also important that they are given the opportunity to learn songs and pieces that are important or interesting to them.
