I find that the most effective method with beginners is to color code things in a way that makes sense. I have stickers for this and a chart of what each means. Music is similar to math, and once the student can make proper associations in their head when looking at music or playing an instrument, the rest becomes easier. I set fun goals and I challenge each student every step of the way to help them reach them. I point out their strengths yet I keep a close eye on their weaknesses and work with them to eliminate any all bad habits in playing instruments. When the student has developed a grasp of the fundamentals I will begin to introduce solo repertoire that will build upon that fundamental knowledge and engage them in the joy of performance. For adults, I engage the students interest in music and find repertoire and exercises that reflect their goals and desires. I also use Alfreds all in o e adult method along with a their greatest hits book to add more repetitive .
