Finally, student interests are very important to me. If a student has a strong desire to learn a song or study a topic, it would be wrong for me to deny them this opportunity. The only exception would be if a student wanted to learn something that was seriously out of their current level. In that case I would find a simpler version for the student, or I would scaffold other songs or exercises to build the necessary skills that are needed to reach that goal. Read More

I started as a part time instructor in music stores while I was still in college in the 1980's and have worked in various public and private schools as a woodwind specialist for over thirty years. I currently operate my own studio where I specialize in woodwinds, keyboards and music theory. I have been with Musika since 2014 and currently have students that have been studying with me for over two years. Read More

I have ten years of experience teaching and seventeen years of experience playing saxophone. I began teaching private lessons in high school part time 10 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio or at students homes. I've also taught music at many residential treatment facilities and programs with kids with special needs or severe psychiatric conditions. My goal as an educator is to help instill and grow the desire to be the best you can be at your instrument. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I normally start on Accent on Achievement, Standard Of Excellence, or if they are learning music in school and continuing their studies privately, I begin with any book that they start on in school. Once they have a solid foundation I will have them learn how to play ear, technique books such as Rubank, and etude books and also music that they will find exciting and fun to play. Read More

I want students to learn what they're most interested in, with the caveat that I can teacg them a "song" or I can teach them the instrument and they can play any song. Whenever I can I play duets with the students. It makes what they're doing sound more like music. And I make mistakes. That shows that mistakes are no big deal (1 wrong note is a mistake. Make the same mistake repeatedly, you're doing it wrong). Read More

I like to make music learning a self-engaged process. Students will keep track of their assignments, make some of the decisions about what music to play, and be expected to practice a minimum of 5 or 6 days per week. Students are sometimes reluctant to have discipline at first, but once they realize that they are making fast progress and overcoming musical challenges, they tend to have a great time. I have had parents of middle schoolers tell me that the structure music lessons have brought to their students' lives has made a huge difference in other areas. Read More

My teaching process looks like a mountain stream. We start at the top of the mountain, and the goal is to get to the bottom. As I teach using my tried and true techniques, we make our way down, but when I notice that my student needs extra help, or should be pushed more, we detour into another stream until we can return to our main path. Sometimes, we diverge immediately and continue down different paths until we make it to the bottom anyway! Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
