I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us. Most students have a regular weekly time, but some students need a variable time due to their individual schedule so we work that out in advance. Read More

I have a great rapport with the students because we both generally want to be there. I have learned a lot about myself over the years about the various ways people learn. One cannot approach every student with the same program. Some are more visual and love to read music, some have a great ear and can play back something they only have heard once. I try to be aware of strengths, and work on the things that need more focus. Read More

I'm a musician who enjoys teaching just as much as I enjoy performing. I have sung in many operas, sung for many venues including school dances, sports games and on recordings. I have sung and played in multiple genres and continue to sing, perform, compose, teach and conduct. I want people to love music and get involved in music regardless of how far they intend to go with itbecause music can really bless someone's life. Read More

I am a musician in many aspects...mainly as a music teacher in Albuquerque Public Schools, and also my job in the Army as a member of the 44th Army Band. I also teach private lessons at a local studio, and I can be found in Old Town on Wednesday and sometimes Saturday nights jamming with the Jazz musicians of this wonderful city. I have taught choir and band from the 5th grade level all the way up through high school including subjects like music theory, jazz band, treble choir, marching band, and percussion ensemble. I have studied music since childhood and continued with two professional degrees in music. My first degree is in Vocal Performance my second is in Music Education. I have been a part of a collegiate piano studio throughout my undergraduate degree. I have been playing classical guitar since childhood, but didn't study it in a collegiate setting. I began studio teaching in college, around 2014. I have continued teaching privately. I have also taught in public and private schools. Read More

I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More

In lessons, I emphasize enjoying the process of learning. Learning an instrument does not happen over night. It takes years of practice and can be a joyful task if one enjoys the process. I send my students home with new goals each week to help guide their practice. Read More

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
My friends in high school got me into a lot of rock and heavy metal bands. One of them got me into Metallica and when I started listening to the "Ride the Lightning" album, I knew I wanted to play drums. I loved the speed and the energy. When I was growing up, there also weren't many female drummers around so it made me feel unique. But when it came down to it, I loved the energy and speed. Later, after discovering Rush, I continued to enjoy drumming on a more sophisticated level and enjoyed the technicality that drumming could offer in genres likes jazz and progressive rock and metal.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am proud of attaining both of my music degrees as well as having performed in choir and band all throughout school.
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
I would say that soloing and improvisation are the hardest aspects to master, because they not only require the capability of mastering one's instrument but also the right level of talent, dedication, and creativity. Two musicians can be at the same level of advancement, but their solos and improvisations will still be different. For example, Mike Portnoy is VERY influenced by Neil Peart and you can hear it in his grooves, but his solos sound very different from Neil's.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
As I've mentioned before, I use a combination of method books, songbooks, and my own teaching materials. For piano students, I use Alfred and Hal Leonard books along with classical songbooks. For drum students, I use the famous "Syncopation" book that you will see in most music stores, along with method books from various publishing companies and songbooks, especially as my students advance and can play more songs.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
It depends on what level the lessons are that the student is taking. If the student is a beginner, we will be covering basics and possibly playing some games or doing some exercises to cover the concepts and give the student some practice. If the student is more advanced, during the first part of the lesson I will review old concepts that the student might need more practice on or teach new concepts while the second half is normally dedicated to learning songs. Sometimes, I might switch the order of this to spice things up a bit or if the song being covered is more of a review that might be good for a warm-up for the student.
