My primary objective in my teaching is to use the multitude of different musical styles within my arsenal to help each of my students find what type of music they are most interested in learning, and to be the best resource I can to help them achieve his/her musical goals. My beginning students generally work out of the Standard of Excellence Book 1, and then graduate to a combination of the Rubank Intermediate/Advanced Methods combined with a mixture of various jazz methods (Jamey Aebersold, Jim Snidero, etc.) as well as a variety of pop/folk/movie theme collections depending on the interests of the individual student. I'm a band director with 25 years of experience who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. Clarinet is my primary instrument, and I feel comfortable teaching all levels of clarinet students. I feel comfortable teaching most other band instruments and piano up to an intermediate level, plus beginning drum set lessons. I began teaching in 2003 at my high school during an arts funding crisis that left band students to have sporadic lessons, since we had had an exceptional teacher previously we persevered and excelled in a student-led environment. I use generally use Faber and Faber for piano and the Yamaha method for guitar. However, each student learns differently therefore I like to meet and assess the needs before choosing a course to follow. For band students, I use the school's chosen method of instruction supplementing with theory, technique and performance pieces. For piano students, I get to know each student's taste in music and choose accordingly. I encourage my voice students to learn a varied repertoire of classical, folk songs, Broadway and pop if they desire. Read More
