In High School, my music practice skills carried over to my academic studies and I was able to graduate with Honors, a 4.00, and earn 14 scholarships to attend college to become a musicteacher. Since then, I have had the privilege ofteaching1000's of students, and mentoring several college students. One of my favorite examples is a student I startedteachingin 4th Grade who later added lessons for 3 other instruments and accomplished his dream of making it into the Chicago Symphony Youth Orchestra. My approach is based largely on the intentions of the student. Beginner students will need a foundation to build on, that foundation will include singing, reading music, clapping rhythms, learning melodies, and free exploration for a fearless musical future. Older experienced students will be exposed to a More in depth view of the fundamental components of music, a particular group twelve crucial aspects that must work effortlessly in concert to create an impressionable musical experience. For beginning flutists, I typically start with the Rubank Elementary Method so that they can have a basic grasp of the fundamentals. Beyond that, I introduce books according to their musical goals and needs. Some of the books my students have studied out of are the Rubank Intermediate/Advanced books and the Melodious and Progressive Studies edited by Cavally. In addition, I have each student regularly work on solo literature so that they can put their hard work on fundamentals into practice. Read More

I approach my teaching method with the perspective of a guided musical exploration. While I have certain methods and books that I rely on I tailor lessons individually to each students' style of learning and goals. I want lessons to be fun and engaging leaving the student inspired to practice and excited to attend the next lesson. Beginner/Intermediate Students: At this level the most important elements are developing proper flute technique (holding the flute, creating a good embouchure, breathing, how to stand/sit with the flute, basic articulation) and good practice habits. Once an adequate amount of fundamental material has been grasped, I like to have the student select songs or pieces that they already know of and learn to play simple translations of them that I will prepare. For intermediate students: heavy rigor with more complicated exercise in the form of etudes (piano), vocal runs (voice), and picking exercises (bass/guitar) is encouraged, with an introduction to more complicated music theory and harmony. For students beginning in an elementary band program, I like to use the same book (such as Essential Elements) that they are using in school. With students learning outside of a band class, or if it won't interfere with what they've already learned, I start with just the headjoint of the flute, making sure the student is comfortable producing clear sound before adding the body of the flute. Because the flute is not like the other woodwind instruments in that you do not blow directly into it, it can be challenging for students to learn how to form an embouchure. Read More
