I began teaching 11 years ago during my senior year of high school. At the time I had been playing for many years. During this time I had five students. One of my students was a friend who had been envious of my playing for a while when he decided to ask for lessons. It was truly amazing and rewarding to see him advance to a level where he could play along with other people and write songs. Read More

For novice students, I will most likely start with a method book such as one from the Essential Element's series. However, I will typically move students through the method book quickly and get right into performance repertoire that is appropriate for their age and level. Composing your own pieces and learning to improvise are extremely important in my method of teaching so I will also start teaching students how to write their own music as soon as possible. Read More

My teaching experience goes back to my college days, when I volunteered at the Artists Collective in Hartford, CT as a saxophone instructor. I began teaching saxophone and clarinet lessons in my home, and music studios after I graduated from college. I enjoy teaching students of all ages. I have also taught Instrumental Music in Schools. I emphasize the importance of practicing for beginners, but I also make lessons fun by making them enjoyable. Read More

I first started teaching back while I was in high school, taking on several students over the summer as they prepared for the upcoming school year. In my lessons back then, I strove to foster a passion for music and the arts in my students by playing through fun music, learning some music theory, and encouraging them to perform in front of their peers. I like to emphasize the power of consistent and efficient practice, regardless of the student's age. Read More

I believe one of the most important things in teaching is meeting the student where they are. It is vital to know a student and their strengths and weaknesses before giving them cookie-cutter assignments. As such, much of the early stages of my lessons involve a fair amount of adjustments and experimentation until we find the pace and flow that works for the student. Once we have found that pace, setting realistic goals and finding ways to engage and encourage the student to keep up a consistent practice schedule become the main priority. Read More

I have been teaching for more than 30 years, mostly in the public schools as well as privately. I have instructed large groups and ensembles, as well as smaller musical groups in and out of the public schools. Performing in various Jazz groups throughout the state has enhanced my teaching knowledge in the field of music education. My Masters degree in music education has enabled me to develop as a well rounded instrumental music teacher, and also as a flexible individual when it comes to understanding my students' musical needs. It's important that the students set goals for their playing as well, this helps with the self-motivation to practice. It could be something as simple as next week I want to play the single note that has been giving me trouble, or as advanced as I want to be able to play this solo piece from memory in three months. Progression in private lessons is all about the motivation of the student, so I try to give them as much motivation as possible. Read More
