My experience dates back to my high school days, in which I had the opportunity to help the beginners prepare for ensemble playing. Throughout my undergraduate days, I was able to work with colleagues in master class, lesson and rehearsal settings that have now won positions in the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, United States Naval Academy Band, Richmond Symphony Orchestra and the Pershings Own United States Army Band. I have been singing since the tender age of three! I have loved singing and performing since then. This love has propelled me into the classrooms where I honed my craft. I also learned the discipline of practicing on other instruments as I went through high school at Emerson School for the Visual and Performing Arts. I graduated with honors as a vocal major. I later attended Wabash College and graduated as the only music major in the class of 2003. Read More

Beginning students will start out with technique practices, while introducing solo literature when appropriate. Technique studies can always be improved and studied, no matter a student's age or proficiency. I try to work within the repertoire a student is interested in at first, then expanding to materials and genres the student may find interesting to help broaden the experience and knowledge a student can gain from our lessons. No matter the age or ability level, I help students understand that each lesson and new idea or piece we learn adds to their experience, and experiences are building blocks for our futures. Read More

The most important thing that I can teach a student is good habits. One of my first teachers always said "I'm not here to teach you to play the trombone, I'm here to teach you how to practice the trombone." That has esentially been my teaching philosophy since then. The half hour to an hour that I would be spending with a student each week is not enough time to turn them into a great trombone player, so the most important thing to do in lessons is to teach them how to practice the instrument when I am not in the room with them. Not every person is going to become a musician, as we all have our own passions and dreams. I want my students to find joy, acceptance, and relief from music, not dread and loathing. I like to ask questions such as "How did playing this passage make you feel? or "What is this piece of music mean to you?" Every piece of music elicits some response from us, and I fully believe that recognition and further development of that response can change the way we perceive music. Read More

I began my teaching career as a private lesson teacher in 2000. Then I advanced into the private schools from grades k-12 from 2001-2003. During this time I taught children that had special needs. They became one of my best students. I taught in public schools as well in 2008. I did private lessons for six years in between from 2003-09. Read More

For the newest of players who may also be children, I usually begin teaching out of The Yamaha Advantage series for beginners. Once the student has demonstrated a strong understanding of the fundamentals of brass playing, I will begin introducing them to different solos, scales, and other repertoire in the hopes that they may want to perform in competition or recital. For more advanced players, I try to find out what the student's specific goals are, and work with them to best achieve said goals. Read More
