I love music and teaching my students the art of creating music is one of the greatest experiences any person can achieve. I was born and raised in Florida where I received my Bachelor of Music degree from Florida State University and Master of Music degree from the University of South Florida, where I was also a teaching assistant in the trombone studio and a music appreciation course. I left Florida to pursue my Doctorate at CCM in Cincinnati and I now live in Chicago. Read More

I have experience teaching with Standards of Excellence as well as Essential Elements, though I am very open to crafting an individualized curricula for students. When planning lessons, I aim to provide students with 1) music to practice from a variety of genres and styles, 2) music that will challenge them in a variety of ways, and 3) creating/composing exercises and etudes that will help the student focus on particular weaknesses in their playing (I have often used music notation software to create individualized etudes for students). My teaching experience dates as far back as my high school days, as I began giving lessons to 6th graders almost 6 years ago. Since then, I have taught and met with dozens of students, and helped them flourish as musicians, teaching both as a partner in local schools and out of my own home. The skill levels at which I teach range widely, as I have taught both beginners, learning how to hold their instrument for the first time, to advanced players almost better than me! Read More

The most important thing that I can teach a student is good habits. One of my first teachers always said "I'm not here to teach you to play the trombone, I'm here to teach you how to practice the trombone." That has esentially been my teaching philosophy since then. The half hour to an hour that I would be spending with a student each week is not enough time to turn them into a great trombone player, so the most important thing to do in lessons is to teach them how to practice the instrument when I am not in the room with them. Depending on the age level, we will then move on to etudes (short study pieces) and short exercises meant to develop technique. I stress the study of etudes not only to develop technique but more importantly to develop the student's own unique musical inner voice. I suggest the student keep a practice journal to maintain an efficient, focused and effective practice. My lessons end with a review and time to answer any questions the student may have. Read More

The most important philosophical concept about private lessons is this: proceed in a way that will maximize your potential to achieve an excellent goal that you can call your own. Although I am not limited to one method book or another, I typically use Arban's for trumpet lessons - with other books and repertoire along with it. My background is Suzuki violin, followed by music literacy and transposition. So, whatever method book we select, we must consider basic furthering of direct musical perceptions, in addition to achievement of stated goals. Read More

As a teacher,I teach based on a students needs. Teaching methods are developed according to the weak areas in where a student needs to improve. Once i observed the problem a method is then developed. I can used methods from teaching books or create my own method. All methods are not the same for individual students. Observation is the key to a successful method. Read More
