For younger students that are just starting, I've found the Accent on Achievement books to be very helpful in developing the basics of playing. From there, Classically-focused players would learn solo repertoire, Jazz-focused players would learn standards and improvisation, and all the other genres would begin to narrow down their appropriate fields. My style of teaching seems to be very relaxed. I never force anything and I always want to give inspiration and motivation to the students. I get more pleasure and comfort knowing that this is something they want to do for themselves and not something I or their parents are forcing them to do. I think this also brings out the best playing and create motivation for the student. Once students grasp the fundamentals, I like to teach how they relates to the music they listen to. Through this, students can learn how theory and scales become music As we get advanced, I like to move in to scale studies, technical warm ups, and theory. I don't believe in a "one size fits all" approach to students where they all play the same exercises, etudes, etc. I help students find what works for them, often times we create our own methods or modify existing ones to suit the needs of the pupil. I always vary my teaching methods to accomodate each of my student's needs.  However, my lesson format stays fundamentally the same.  I always begin with some mouthpiece buzzing, which incorporates ear-training, then move to rhythm exercises, scales and technical studies, method book, and any other music the student is working on at the time. My teaching style is unique in that I do not push directly for quality. I believe that quality should be the natural product of efficient practice, which can only be achieved by early introduction to good technique, good habits, and positive motivation. When I start with a student, my goal is to make them smile and laugh.
