For beginners, I personally recommend the Essential Elements Book. If you are barely starting on an instrument, make sure you get book 1. Aside from the fact that I was taught with that book when I was in middle school, I taught with that particular method book to my beginners in the 2021-2022 school year. For older beginners, I will assess their interests in order to keep them interested in their new instrument. For students with more experience, I will assess their skill level and assign exercises to further develop their fundamentals, and assign literature to grow the student's repertoire that will also reinforce their strong points while strengthening other points in their playing. My teaching experience sates back to running trumpet sectionals (in Junior High High School) for an All Star Jazz Band in my home town. When I was 16 I started teaching younger trumpet students as well. I descovered early on that I had a passion for directing and teaching. This stayed with me, and I always have incorporated education into my directing and leadership styles as a perormer. As a Musical Director for Royal Caribbean I would regularly have to teach an hour long show to my international band in under an hour and a half.I know that learning an instrument is hard work and that motivation is key to success.
