Instruments: Violin Saxophone Music

I am from the Columbus, Ohio region and am receiving my Bachelors in Music Education in May 2021 with my primary instrument being saxophone. I am extremely close to my family, living with my mom, grandpa, and three sisters. I enjoy being outside and reading in my free time. I love to see students grow individually in music through their instruments or general love of music. Making music is one of the most rewarding and intimate experiences someone can have. Read More

Instruments: Trumpet Euphonium French Horn

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Trumpet is a harder instrument to simply play than most other instruments, with the exception of maybe oboe and bassoon. Producing a good tone consistently is one of the most difficult things to do on the instrument. Maintaining that tone while focusing on other areas of technique is the real trick and the question I always find myself coming back to. "How can I make this sound good."

When will I start to see results?
Every person is different and will see results in different amounts of time. The largest factor is determining how long results take to appear is simple the amount of time you dedicate to not just your instrument, but music in general. While 15-30 minutes of practicing a day is a fantastic start, it will not yield results as quickly as the 15-30 minutes a day plus dedicated listening time, simple score analysis, or any other number of "deep learning" techniques away from the instrument.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
There is an art to practicing effectively and efficiently. While learning this skill, it is important to be organized and experiment with different practice techniques to see what works best for you in particular. In general, when you are trying to learn a new piece of music the first step is to be able to hear and sing your part. Depending on how much experience as a musician, this may take various amounts of time to accomplish. Sitting down at a piano or singing along with a recording are some of the most effective ways to learn your part aurally. Then, once you know how your part is supposed to go, try sight reading the piece with all the musical intent you can muster. Locate and isolate technically troublesome areas either turning the music into a set of exercises or find a set of exercises that will target your technical weakness. The singular biggest piece of advice anybody could ever give for effective practicing is to NOT simply start at the beginning of a piece and restart until you get it correct. This will lead to nothing but frustration, overworking the opening, and ignoring troublesome sections.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I believe that trumpet is a much more physically demanding instrument than more traditional instruments such as piano, violin, or voice. I personally do not recommend starting a child on a trumpet before the age of 9 or 10, but I would encourage students to experiment with other instruments as soon as they express any interest in music what-so-ever.

Guitar Maintenance: Keeping Your Guitar in Top Shape

...guitar repaired, but my guitar never looked and sounded the way it did before that summer day on the rooftop. When I bought my guitar, the guy from the music store who sold it to me failed to mention that Colorado’s dry climate is very inhospitable for acoustic guitars, and that I’d need a humidifier, so I had no idea that my guitar was in any danger.   Your acoustic guitar can crack in any sort of climate, but it’s especially at risk in the nation’s dryer climates. Here’s a map to help you see if you live in a dry climate:... Read More

...theory that can be transferred to any other instrument. Serious musicians need a keyboard around the studio to help them better understand their own main instrument.   A solid keyboard will come with a sustain pedal and weighted keys. A sustain pedal is a device that helps lengthen and sustain notes. The term “weighted keys” simply refers to the weight it takes to press down a note on a keyboard. Cheap, poorly-made keyboards won’t have weighted keys and aren’t great music gifts for anyone looking to play seriously.   Gig Bag   If the musician in your life performs often, then a gig bag is one ... How to Read Chord Diagrams   Chord boxes, chord diagrams, and chord grids all mean the same thing. Basically, they refer to the illustrations that are used to present a quick and easy way to notate chords. Each diagram represents a section of the guitar’s fret board. When Should You Upgrade Your Instrument?

...You’re going to find that you develop a preference for certain instruments after you become more experienced as a musician. For instance, some guitarists prefer Gibson guitars while others prefer Fender guitars. Both of those companies produce world-class instruments, some examples of which have actually become legendary. They have subtle differences in the way they are constructed – particularly where the fret board is concerned – that makes some musicians prefer one brand strongly over the other. It will take you time to develop sufficient skill to know whether you prefer one instrument over another, so invest some time in developing your own style so that you know which instruments you ... What is the Best Age to Start Guitar Lessons?

...in doubt, we recommend going with the larger size instrument, instead of waiting and letting your child grow into a larger guitar. See our chart below that shows what size instrument is appropriate for what age child. Guitar Size Chart Age Guitar Size 5-8 1/2 size 8-12 3/4 size 12-Adult 4/4 Full size By starting your child with the correct size guitar, you give them a chance to be more comfortable with the instrument, and increase the likelihood that they will stick with it and not want to quit playing. If the instrument is too big, they won’t enjoy practicing and it will be more difficult for both the student and parent. Yamaha makes student size guitars ... Read More
