As a multi-instrumentalists, I use a cross disciplinary approach even when a student is only learning one instrument. I do make use of method books for beginners, and the specific book depends upon the instrument, but I have my own methods and materials which I utilize in my lessons. Building a repertoire is encouraged, and I use the material to assist in instructing in theory and musical communication. My students are taught to be self-sufficient, by way of practice, study, and cultivating an "ear." Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with a basic book like Fiddle Magic by Sally O'Reilly. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, I will move on to the Suzuki Books. Along with teaching from the Suzuki Book, I will supplement their learning with an etude book such as Wohlfahrt and Kreutzer. After a certain point, I will start working on pieces and concertos not in the Suzuki books anymore. Read More

When I was two years old, I saw a young girl play the violin in a concert. I was so inspired that I begged my parents to let me begin violin lessons. Finally, at five years old, I stood proudly with my tiny violin and have not put it down since. Playing the violin has taken me around the world for various performances, music festivals, and teaching workshops. I have performed as a soloist with the New York Concerti Sinfonietta in Carnegie Hall, traveled to three different continents for music festival concerts, and co-founded the Heartbeat Project and the Joining Hands Project. Teaching methods are varied according to different students. I believe that each student has their personality and own way of learing, so one way of teaching wouldn't fit all students at the same time. For beginner students who are children, I typically start with some fun musical games to help them learn the fundamentals, for adults I usually jump right on what's needed to establish the basics because efficiency is the priority thing they look for in making progress of playing the violin. I never settled on one instrument; continuously collecting new instruments throughout my childhood. I was always excited for a new technical challenge and to explore a new genre of music, and I have a unique relationship of each of the instruments I play. My teaching experience has been similar: I began teaching violin lessons 8 years ago, and I have since become a swimming instructor, theater/improv teacher and program director, and international ESL teacher. As I said above, I have been teaching since I was in high school and began studying the Suzuki Method at the age of four. I believe that anyone is able to learn an instrument no matter their age, as long as they stick to a regular practice schedule, have patience, are passionate, and have goals in mind at all times. My goal is to make the learning experience unique for each student. Read More
