Instruments: Violin Viola

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with violin method book, Essential Elements for Strings to learn the good basics and reading the notes and where to find those notes they just learned on the fingerboard. I also introduce the Suzuki Violin School volume 1 to learn the major songs written for the violin and simply to play more songs than the scales and exercises. For students who are more advanced, I help them their school orchestra music and make sure they are doing very well on top of the class in addition to continuing with the private lesson music. My experience spans a rich tapestry of teaching roles that have allowed me to engage with students across various age groups and backgrounds. I've conducted masterclasses at esteemed institutions like the University of Northern Iowa and Towson University, instilling my passion for the violin and music education in young minds. My dedication to chamber music extends beyond performance, as I take on the role of Chamber Strings Coordinator and Coach at the Leon Fleisher Academy, overseeing curriculum design, repertoire selection, and fostering musical growth in chamber settings. To become a good musician, it is important to have strong fundamentals and also good understanding of different musical styles. I have had the opportunities to study music with top professors across Asia, Europe and the United States. This has brought me valuable perspectives of different musical styles, practice methods and systems. As a result, I have combined and rearranged everything I learnt and created my own system and lesson plans tailored to different students of all levels. Read More

Beginner: Learning the violin can be an adventure! From the first moment holding the violin, the student develops a natural way of holding the instrument and develops auditory skills that nurture a good musical foundation. Methods such as Suzuki as well as other traditional methods are used in an approach customized to each student. Intermediate: Once the student has a good foundation, the focus is on further developing a coordinated way of physically relating to the violin, developing critical listening skills, problem-solving, self-monitoring, building repertoire, growing an ability to express oneself on the violin, and learning to play with others in an ensemble. For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, Suzuki, and easy scales. Once the student has progressed and appears to grasp the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce etudes and solo pieces. I also teach students elementary music theory related to the pieces they are learning. For advanced students, I focus more on their technique and performance. Scales and etudes are essential as well as having experience playing a diverse repertoire. Read More

Instruments: Violin Fiddle

When teaching fiddle I teach students starting on simple tunes that we learn by ear and memorize. With a few standard well known tunes down I use those to demonstrate more of the nuances of fiddle performance. The process of learning fiddle is a simultaneous process of learning how to pick up tunes quickly by ear and play them idiomatically so there is not much in the way of text that I use in the actual lessons however I will recommend readings depending on how much the student is interested in that, otherwise we mostly have a fun time playing fiddle Music Theory I teach using the standard AP music theory text and the Kostka Tonal harmony book or other textbooks that the student is using from their classes. Instruments: Piano Violin

I use traditional method for the students who like to pursue classical music and I teach modern music for those who are not so interested in classical music. Even though I use Suzuki method for violin, I emphasize sight reading and theory. For Suzuki students, I encourage them to memorize whole book and perform before move onto next level. For the young students and beginners, I strongly recommend parents observe the lessons so that they can support and help students to practice. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
