I've taught piano and violin for many years and enjoy the rewards and the challenges of working with students and having them learn the skills to both enjoy and succeed in music. I have also spent a number of years as music director for several different schools and churches working with choirs and handbells. For my beginning students, I typically start with either Essential Elements 2000 for strings or Sound Innovations. Both books give younger students a grasp on the fundamentals of technique. As they grow I then introduce solo repertoire by using the Suzuki Books but also like to add a fiddle book. Sometimes students gradually go either to fiddle or to classical. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. For fiddling, I gauge the students' strengths and develop some exercises that will enhance their sound and overall technique. Then, we choose tunes that are interesting to the student and work through them either one or a few at a time, depending on what is a comfortable work load and also a comfortable challenge.
