Once an adequate amount of fundamental material has been grasped, I like to have the student select songs or pieces that they already know of and learn to play simple translations of them that I will prepare. Everybody's experience with music is different and not everybody will pick things up as quickly as others so you must meet them where they are. Music is nerve-racking at first because expressing ourselves isn't something that is always encouraged so I look for something they are interested in to start off.
