Instruments: Voice Music
My teaching style varies from student to student. Everyone learns differently and I tailor each lesson based on that particular student's learning style. Each student will start off with warmups, even if they have warmed up themselves, so I can gauge how their voice is working on that particular day. After warmups, which encompass specific exercises based on the needs of the student, we move into working technique into repertoire. Read More

Personally I am interested in many different genres of music (classical voice, jazz voice, classical piano, jazz piano, accompanying), and in college I was able to take many different kinds of lessons to fulfill my needs. As a result, I feel very comfortable teaching others about all sorts of different genres of music. Read More

First and foremost, I want music to be fun for my students. I want them to know that all of their favorite songs by their favorite artists can be played by implementing the correct techniques and fundamentals. I try to instill the importance of scales and progressions, and how that connects into learning their favorite songs or even writing their own original material. No matter where you would like to go musically, we all need to know the basics to get us there. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my high school, as I began teaching private lessons part time 7 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 3 years since graduating college. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. My approach is definitely supportive and positive, but I don't let that get in the way of challenging the student. I am not afraid to tell the student that they can do better. It's very important to get to know the student's goals and inspirations. That way, I can focus on the skills they need. Also, I like to let the student learn songs by artists they love (if applicable) because it motivates them and sometimes it ends up being the sound they want to go for anyway. Read More

My experience with learning was fun. Since I was learning multiple instruments it was fun to tie everything together. I could say the best part while learning was understanding theory...that part of my learning opened up many doors for me musically. I started to understand why certain notes could and couldn't be played, why and how to use different scales. Those things are the same things I try to reveal to the students when the time is right. A very important aspect to my enjoyment of all of these pursuits is the degree to which they actually connect and overlap with many other topics and disciplines- science, mathematics, visual art, language and sociology all intersect with music at one point or another. This indiscriminate enthusiasm that I have for all music and all topics is something that I am very excited to share with and impart upon my future students- and that I have every intention of carrying with me into each lesson that I teach.
