To me, that means training studentsin the styles of music that each individual feels the most connected to, and then extending their knowledge and awareness to styles that they may not have as much experience with. During my high school years, I focused on composition, which became my main area of study during college. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Next, doing exercises together to learn diaphragm breathing and see the joy as they realize they can make a lovely vocal sound. I address breathing, body alignment, relaxation/tension, and all of the aspects of singing through exercises tailor-made to address the student's individual and immediate needs. For most of my students, I will provide specific pieces that will help in their development and keep their interest.
