For begining students who are under the age of thirteen, I prefer to start with Bastien's Piano Basics. This series comes with four different books (Technic, Piano, Performance, and Theory) that give the student a well rounded lesson. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop and hone their skills! I am extremely hands on and I listen very intently during my sessions. I have a great "ear" which is my best asset. I encourage each student to progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by maintaining a stress free environment. I teach breath, posture, resonance, placement and help students get over their mental hurdles to sing their best. When they are getting the basics, I will introduce music of their favorite styles into lessons and we will work on technique seperately and through these repertoire selections. At the end of each lesson, I will give students homework and three to five goals for the week. I give them a very clear idea of what they need to do at home to keep progress moving forward. I find that it does not matter which style of singing you would like to learn or how you would like to use your voice, breathing and breath work are an essential foundation to wonderful music making.
