Most of the students I've taught have had a background in music through singing in choirs, etc. Other students have had a limited musical background. At whatever the ability level or background, I always try to introduce appropriate solo repertoire to which the student can relate, as well as introducing songs that will aid in teaching proper vocal technique and proper diction. I helped students successfully prepare auditions for college, musical theatre productions, all-state choir, summer music programs, and more. I taught students in a wide variety of musical styles and skill levels. I was also able to sing in two professional choirs from 2010-2019. For the last 7 years, in addition to teaching private piano and voice lessons in my private studio, I also served as the choir director/music theory/music appreciation instructor at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, a small state-funded boarding high school for gifted students. I recently finished my studies to receive my Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy degree from Sam Houston State University. At SHSU I gained experience working with a variety of clientele including those diagnosed with autism, dementia, traumatic brain injury (TBI), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and spina bifida. I also provided live percussion music with the Creative Movement Program with the dance department at Sam Houston State University. I usually start all of my piano students from the Alfred series. Those that are more advanced will complete the curriculum quicker.. Alfred seems to offer a more detailed instruction technique. It offers step by step instructions. The student can almost teach himself. For guitar I use the Everyday guitar method. This method introduces each string at a time. I usually start with breathing exercises and vocalises for all students. I also use the exercise books Concone and Sieber. After the student has grasped the breathing and the coordination of the vocalises we move on to repertoire that is age appropriate. I encourage my students to sing in Italian as this helps them to acquire a proper technique because Italian uses pure vowels. I have studied with some great teachers and feel like I need to pass on those methods to the next generation of musicians. Read More

I have enjoyed playing, singing and accompanying vocally and on piano, organ and keyboard since the age of 7.  I have both Choir and Solo vocal experience as well as played piano and organ for Churches and special performances. I have trained choirs and soloist and taught singing lessons for more than 10 years. I have been teaching private voice since 1991.  Along with teaching privately out of my home, over the years I have served on faculty as an adjunct voice professor at the college and university level, and have taught private voice in school districts for their junior high and high school choirs.  My own children study with me and are performing regularly in musical theater productions and choirs.  I love helping singers discover their beautiful, God-given singing voice and watching it blossom as they consistently practice and apply the techniques.
