I hold a Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance (and a minor in dance) from Millikin University (Decatur, IL) and a Master's degree in Vocal Performance from Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, IL) where I focused on vocal pedagogy. During both my undergrad and graduate studies, I was active in the college choirs and opera productions. As a teacher my goal is not to simply teach a student how to play or sing a certain song. My goal is to teach my students how to use the discipline of music to help them to develop their character. To that end I emphasize learning music fundamentals well and being able to put them into practice playing or singing in public at every opportunity. During our lessons we will address correct breathing and posture and different vocalises that will strengthen and free up the voice, giving the student more power, more range and more freedom/agility.  Singing with freedom is a different path for each singer, and I will prescribe different exercises for each area of the voice we are trying to improve.  You will also be assigned songs: some classical, some musical theater and then whatever genre is your favorite.
