When I first start working with my voice students I like to learn where you are at, with any previous vocal training, what techniques you may or may not know, and where you are at musically with sight reading and theory. It is really important to have the fundamentals down in order to have a strong base to grow from and add musicality and stylization. For more advanced students I again like to meet you where you are and incorporate some of the techniques that I have that will help you grow to the next level and give you the ability to perform any kind of genre and style of music because you have strong core techniques. In voice I teach what I learned the Alexander Technique method of singing which focuses on posture and alignment. In piano I learned the Russian method and do teach it but I also teach the popular and Jazz method of fake book reading. I use whatever method the student require based on their ability to learn and what there goals are but am fond of the Faber and Faber method. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
My method makes understanding the breathing, support and execution of the voice the first priority. After this is achieved, exercises are assigned to further develop range, control, strength and vocal agility. The bottom line is that although it takes years to develop a strong, skillful and sensitive singer, it should not take years for a singer with good tutelage and a willingness to work hard, to sing competently. So without the ability of the student to make a good tone and control the voice, all the exercise cds and books are useless. Read More
Instruments: Voice Clarinet Recorder
For the more advanced player, I introduce them to the "Rose 40 Etudes" book and prepare them for solo, and ensemble repertoire. The goal in every lesson is to keep it fun and engaging. I encourage all students in every level to practice regularly, and keep a notebook of their progress in lesson that they will use as a reference in their practice sessions. This will also allow me to monitor their progression to make adjustments as needed. Read More

There are many preparatory series available for beginning students. I am not particular about which series I work with. Often there are students with previous instructors and I have no trouble picking up where the student left off. I can recommend books or a series as well as supplemental skills practice books. There are many wonderful books that can be easily purchased online. Sheet music is also available online. I can show students where to look for the music they want to learn. Read More

My teaching style is always based around engagement. Letting the student select what he/she wants to learn is paramount to any style of study. I have found that my best teachers played as much as i did during lessons, and not just played but really showed their passion for playing! This is very important to show a student. You only have more and more fun the more you play. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 15 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 10 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical, gospel, christian, jazz and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn.
