I usually suggest repertoire to a student based on their level and/ or Voice type but I am also delighted to help a student with a repertoire of their own choice. I will continually focus on vowel-forming exercises and funneling the singing air through the nasal cavity and middle of the face. This way, the student will understand how to produce a big sound without straining. Breathing exercises such as 'underwater noises' and 'tornado siren' are fun and keep the mood open and lively. I love teaching because singing became such an important part of my life after I started taking lessons. I think students should want to practice for the joy of it, and so try to keep lessons fun and informative. I do believe in the importance of technique, however, and so try to encourage students to do short vocal exercises daily. As I continued into my collegiate music education career, I gave on-campus voice lessons to elementary and middle school students in the community while becoming a student choral director for my university's mixed choral ensemble. I spend about a third of the lesson on specific technique work and I always encourage students to bring in their own material that we can work on as well.
