I try to tailor lesson plans to each individual as I believe different people want to get different things out of singing. For younger students, I will focus on the fundamentals of music such as pitch recognition, rhythmic accuracy, scale execution. These building blocks can help children confidently express themselves in music. For older students, I will build on the aforementioned principles and explore how to use technique and emotion to express oneself in singing. Read More

All in all, my approach of teaching is holistic with innovative pedagogical methods. I will observe and adjust the student based on their skills and goals so they may learn the instrument of choice to their greatest abilities. For all levels, I like to listen to their goals and interests when it comes to music; what do you want to achieve by learning an instrument? This way we can move forward in the most efficient and fun way possible. Read More

If you wish to educate, you must inspire first. Each student is encouraged to proceed at a pace that is suited to their aptitude, goals, schedule and drive. Positive acknowlegement of achievements, clear communication and demonstration of techniques, opportunities to play with others at a similar level of growth and an atmosphere of musical community are key to the progress of my students. For my jazz students, I always start them off singing simple standard tunes that many people are familiar with. I have access to every jazz real book, and have many different lead sheets to tunes that aren't even included in them. I also have access to many different musical theatre books for all different voice types. I'm working on getting more piano books in my library, but I am a friend to many professional pianist that are able to provide a variety of texts to me which helps me more than I know. Read More

For piano I prefer the Faber series. I like to include scales, sight-reading, and repertoire of the students choosing and of my suggestion. For Voice I like to cover the anatomical fundamentals (posture, breath, phonation, and depending on age), in the first lesson, and each lesson includes a warm-up as well as at least one piece of repertoire of the students choosing. For guitar I teach note reading as well as tablature, but we mostly work from tablature, unless the student is studying classical. Read More

The first half of a typical voice lesson is spent on vocal warm-ups and vocalises. These consist of scales, arpeggios, vowel unification, breath work, etc. and have been accumulated from many teachers over a variety of traditions. Vocalises are the most important part of a solid vocal technique. The second half of lessons is spent working on repertoire either brought in by the student or assigned by myself. Concepts from vocal warm ups will be applied to repertoire, and students are expected to practice on a regular basis outside of lessons. Read More

Teaching for me is the difference between passion and disaster. With the right push, anyone can feel the need to play music. Music isn't supposed to be intended for a chosen few. My first teachers really engrained that into my mind when I first started learning. Through this, I have learned to create an environment where there are no mistakes, only chances to learn. It if very hard to continue in something so subjective, like music, constantly berating ones self. Read More
