Building a foundation in aural training, and understanding what you're hearing, will allow any student to then approach an instrument with clarity and patience. Everybody learns differently, and everybody has different skill-sets and levels. I also believe most people have different styles. For beginners just picking up a guitar (or bass), I'm more apt to have them refer to some curriculum outside of the lesson session, as opposed to more advanced students, where the discernment on what to use as reference varies with each individual. Since middle school, I have always loved helping friends with passages from solo and ensemble and band pieces, no matter the instrument. Whether it was rhythms, notes or intonation, even if I didn't know how to play the instrument yet, I would use a fingering chart and help them however I could. During high school, I would help beginner students that have never made a sound on an instrument learn the basics of what the instrument parts do, how to blow/buzz on the mouthpiece, and how to read music and play the instrument along with the music. As far as books go, I prefer the Hal Leonard method, especially for beginner musicians. I combine visual, audio and kinesthetic learning methods to tailor to anyone's needs.
