I have taught for 25 years and can teach any level on guitar and most levels on piano. I have taught thousands of people, many of them complete beginners who have become very accomplished musicians through years of lessons. I really enjoy helping high school jazz band students with their pieces. I help the students understand how to simplify their thinking on the songs to make it easier to play them. Read More
Instruments: Piano
After starting piano performance at age 12 and music composition at age 14, I shortly graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2012 with a Music Composition/Theory degree and have composed nearly 4 hours of Symphonies, Concertos, Soundtracks, Jazz Combos, Woodwind Ensembles, Choral works, World musics, and other forms of Postmodernism. Since Post-Graduation, I've been taking composition lessons with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra composer William Hill, and is composing his Third Symphony. Read More

I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in May 2013 with a degree in jazz studies. While at UNC I studied jazz music as well as classical music. I'm very excited about teaching beginning and intermediate improvisers my own systematic approach to jazz improvisation. I'm also excited about teaching saxophone technique to beginning and intermediate saxophonists. I also teach beginning piano. Read More

I am very goal-oriented in my teaching because it provides not only motivation but proof for my students. In that vain, it's important for me to understand why a student is taking lessons so that we can effectively work together to progress. Wether the goal is to familiarize a young student with note reading and musical ideas, to help a musical hobbyist learn their favorite hits, or to train technique for refined classical music performance - I take a tailored approach to each student's instruction. Since the age of 11, Anna Kate has held a tremendous passion for classical flute. It was her junior year of high school when she decided to pursue a career in music and started her journey by joining the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra, which toured in France, performing at large concerts in various cities. Subsequently she was accepted to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts High School to further advance her studies in flute, requiring extensive time commitments of practicing five plus hours per day. Instruments: Piano Violin
For beginning students on violin we start with many techniques found in the Suzuki method. From there, we jump into different styles of music while still focusing on developing solid technical foundations for the student. Once we move into standard repertoire the lessons begin to change based on what the student needs. I am a firm believer in consistent practice. I would much rather have a student who practices daily for 15 minutes then a student who does not practice except for the day before their lesson for two hours. Read More

I start with pushing students to develop good habits early on in their playing. I like to get my students playing songs in their genre of choice as soon as possible. This method generates interest in their instrument from the very begining. I select their repetoire based on what techniques we are currently working on and find songs that will force them to develop those techniques in order for them to effectively perform each piece. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practice time should not be about clock-work rigidity but about creativity. Keep in mind that music is first and foremost for your own personal enjoyment. So, get creative by making your practice space comfortable and inspiring. Whatever is meaningful to you. Typically it is best to go down the list of things to do. Start with the warm-ups: scales, arpeggios. As guitarist or pianist it is important to get your hands moving. After the warm segue to study book and/or your chosen solo piece. But if you're feeling inspired right in the moment and want to jump into the solo, then don't waste it on scales! You can go back to that later.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
As parents, we are fairly in tuned to our child's needs, wants or aspirations. So, when you frequently see them playing an instrument of their own design, that is usually a pretty good indicator your child is ready for music lessons. Another sign is conversation. Does your child talk about playing an instrument not just in passing, but often? Does your child frequently ask to hear a particular song, genre, or an artist repeated over and over again? (like Taylor Swift, or do they love to hear Bach, which is true because I did) Do you catch a private moment and observe the child seeking out certain kinds of music to listen to? If so, these are just a few indicators that it may be time to cultivate that interest through music lessons
When will I start to see results?
Music is like learning a language. First, we learn nouns (notes), then verbs (scales and arpeggios), and soon we are learning full sentences (a melodic line) to reading a whole book (a solo piece or song). To the degree a student applies themselves to their practice time, is the degree by which you should start to see results by the following week after each lesson. Everyone is different. Everyone has a different level of talent--there's no shame in that. I have seen students with not much talent, yet their passion and drive to succeed made them better players than the most talented! Absolutely true! Because I make sure everyone goes at their own pace, results can be leaps and bounds or incremental. But one thing is certain: the student does come away with more "tools in their tool belt" than when they came in.
